Keep an eye out in your child's bag for a note regarding the Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up in Week 10.
Students in K/1W can book their appointments online here. As part of our Paddock to Plate unit of enquiry, we looked at how wheat grows, how it makes it to our plates, and different things it is used to make - bread, pizza dough, biscuits, doughnuts, cereal, cakes, muffins, cupcakes, wraps, pasta etc. We then looked at another ingredient used in the bread making process - yeast. Did you know that yeast is a living organism? We put on our scientist thinking hats and conducted a yeast experiment. We had zip lock bags with yeast in them, then added salt to some, sugar to some and cold and warm water to different bags. Then we waited... and waited... we observed some slight changes. We then added more yeast to each bag, and waited again. Some of the bags puffed up a little as the yeast bubbled and grew... then, just as the home bell went - one of the bags puffed up so much that we thought it was going to explode! It was super tight! After school, another one of the bags puffed up completely and was rescued from the classroom just in time! You could try these experiments at home. Would adding sugar and or salt change the speed or level of growth? Does warm water or cold water provide a faster reaction? Remember to keep a close eye on it! As part of our family history unit, we have been holding a baby guessing competition. It has been really fun trying to guess who is who! Year One have been thoroughly enjoying their tennis sessions with Rob Frawley each Friday afternoon. Here are some action shots from the most recent session. We have been quite busy in maths during the first few weeks of March! We have been looking at patterns and how patterns relate to numbers - leading into number patterns and skip counting Year One are busy each morning working within each component of the Literacy curriculum. The children participate in shared, guided and independent reading, listening activities, guided and independent writing both on paper and on the ipads, spelling, phonemic awareness and phonics activities. Critical and creative thinking play an important role when making connections during small and large group discussions before, during and after these sessions. This time is also used to develop and refine fine motor skills, where the children are engaged in a variety of creative, and at times, challenging activities. Feel free to join us and help out any morning from 9-11am. |
